Yesterday I sent out the press releases on the first Abendmusiken concert of the season, The Mozart Konzert, scheduled for Saturday, October 1st at 7:30 pm and repeated on Sunday, October 2nd at 4:00 pm. Miguel Felipe designed this concert’s very sophisticated and classy postcard.
This will be a concert of Firsts: it will be a debut of the Philip Belt fortepiano (after Anton Walter, 1782), which came into our possession from the estate of Else Geissmar, Carl Crosier’s piano teacher from the University of Washington. So this will be Honolulu’s first opportunity to hear this beautiful instrument. Carl will be playing Mozart’s Fantasia in D minor, K. 397, followed by the Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478. On this piece the string players will be using gut rather than steel strings on their instruments, which I believe will be a first for an Abendmusiken concert. They will also be using Vallotti tuning, which some have called “sweeter” than equal temperament. It will also be Miguel Felipe’s debut with the Bach Chamber Orchestra.
Also on the program will be Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, K. 165 with Georgine Stark, soprano, and the Violin Concerto in A major K. 219 with Darel Stark, solo violin and conductor. Neither of these two pieces have been performed on an Abendmusiken concert before. Miguel will conduct the LCH Choir and Bach Chamber Orchestra in Mozart’s Venite Populi, K. 260.
